Opportunity cost

The story is about 2 friends who have known each other all their lives and are very close, they are both 17 years old. Jay is abit of a loose cannon and tends to open his mouth before he thinks about what he's going to say. His best friend Ben is completely the opposite of Jay, He's sensible quiet and to things by the book. One day Jay and Ben are on a night out going round the local town having a good time minding there own buisness and sipping on a few suds, When they are confronted by a group of lads also on a night out. They're being very loud and boystrous and walk up to Jay and Ben and start pushing them around. As they are outnumbered Ben tries to defuse the situation but the lads don't care and are just looking for a fight. Ben pulls Jay and they run off up town as fast as they can. As the pubs start to close the boys decide to call it a night and head off home When just ahead of them they notice one of the lads who started on them earlier walking home on his own. Jay picks up a brick from a loose wall without Ben noticing and starts to pick up the pace. As they gain on the lad Ben urges Jay to let what happened earlier to slide, Jay nods his head. Then suddenly Jay runs forward and with one huge swing hits the lad in the side of the head with the brick. The boys falls to the ground and doesnt move. In a state of shock Jay and Ben run home as fast as they can. They stay up all night talking about it. The next morning Jay and Ben go downstairs where Ben's mum and dad are watching the news while having breakfast. The boys hear on the news that there has been a murder in their town. A picture of the deceased confirms the boys worst fears, Jay had killed that lad. For hours the boys contemplate iver what to do. Jay has had previous convictions and would have very little chance trying to portray it as man slaughter. Ben on the other hand has a clean slate. Ben has always looked after Jay for most of his life, mainly down to the fact that Jays parents died when he was 4 and he now lives with his aunty. Ben says that for Jay he will turn himself in as the killer because the longer they wait the worse it will get. Jay doesnt want this to happen but eventually he is persuaded. Ben ends up gettin put in a jouvinile system. Jay finds it very difficult to cope with the guilt.
